Cicada Jenerik

Kind Traverse V11

Rocky Mountain National Park

August 8, 2005

On August 8, 2005, Cicada Jenerik once again climbed her age, this time V11 at age 11, with the send of the Kind Traverse at RMNP. Cicada is the youngest person to climb this grade and still the only person to ever boulder their age. This was Cicada's first trip to RMNP and she fortunately had Daniel Woods, Jon Cardwell, Paul Robinson and Vasya Vorotnikov as tour guides and general enthusiastic support. On Friday the 5th Cicada worked the problem for about an hour, doing all of the moves and linking the second half of the 17 move problem. Because of the intense foot beta of toe cams and heel hooks she wore a pair of Mad Rock Locos on her right foot and Hookers on her left.

She returned on Sat the 6th and spent 3-4 hours linking the three back to back crux sections, eventually doing the problem in two halves. She took Sunday off to rest and came back on Monday ready to send. After a few warm up burns she cruised the problem but hit shallow on the finishing jug and slid off. She then put in about 20 progressively worse attempts until she was becoming extremely frustrated. At this point her dad took her down to the stream where they spent about an hour and a half racing sticks and leaves in the water (she won all but one race).

After this mental and physical rest Cicada jumped back on the Kind Traverse and hiked the problem. It was actually raining at the time of her send, but given that all of the hard moves were on a steep overhang the critical holds were dry. It did make for a more interesting top out on the easier but wet holds.
